NEW COURSE : DEFINITION OF INTRODUCTION TO LITERATURE AND PROSE

WHAT IS INTRODUCTION TO LITERATURE?

According to some experts, literature is defined:
Gyasi (1973) defines it in its broad sense as "anything that is written",

Rees (1973) sees it in the narrow sense of "writing which expresses and communicates thought, feelings and attitudes towards life".

Moody (1987) writes that literature springs from our inborn love of telling a story, of arranging words in pleasing patterns, of expressing in words some special aspects of our human experience.

E.M. Forster "What is wonderful about great literature is that it transforms the man who reads it towards the condition of the man who wrote."

Henry van Dyke “Literature consists of those writing which interpret the meanings of nature and life, in words of charm and power, touched with the personality of the author, in artistic forms of permanent interest.”

Klarer (2004:1) says that in most cases, literature is referred to as the entirety of written expression, with the restriction that not every written document can be categorized as literature in the more exact sense of the word.

Wellek and Warren (1963:22) also state that the term literature seems best if we limit it to the art of literature, that is, to imaginative literature. Literature is also produced by imagination of the author. Literature is not just a document of facts, it is not just the collection of real events though it may happen in the real life. Literature can create its own world as a product of the unlimited imagination.

Salman Rushdie "Literature is where I go to explore the highest and lowest places in human society and in the human spirit, where I hope to find not absolute truth but the truth of the tale, of the imagination and of the heart."

Boulton (1980) defines literature from a functional perspective as the imaginative work that gives us R’s: recreation, recognition, revelation and redemption.

Rees (1973), after describing what he regarded as literature, summed up that literature is a permanent expression in words of some thoughts or feelings in ideas about life and the world.

In my opinion, literature is a form of someone's imagination works against what they felt by pouring through writing. that has inner beauty, such as prose, poetry, drama. The third things contains the elements to enjoy life to produce various works of art and to entertaining people.

Literature is a non-scientific works and also an additional skill possessed to issue an appreciation of the world and life. The goal that the readers feels the same as what is perceived by the author. It is beneficial for students to improve their English language skills, Especially as a teacher to make students applying and being able to create works of art.

WHAT IS PROSE?

Edgar V. Roberts and Henry E. Jacobs (1995:2) classify prose into two, fiction prose and nonfiction prose. Fiction, originally meant anything made up or shaped, is prose stories based on the author’s creation and imagination. It includes myths, parables, novels, romances, and short stories
.
On the other hand, nonfiction is literary works which describe or interpret facts, present judgments, and opinions. It consists of news reports, essays, magazines, newspapers, encyclopedias, broadcast media, films, letters, historical and biographical works and many other forms of communication.
